GIFT TREE AND YULE CHEST

There are two traditions with our Hartwood Yule: a Gift Tree and the Yule Chest.
There are similarities and differences between the two.
The Gift Tree is a place to give a gift and take a gift. It is meant to be something that anyone at the event can participate in. Something small, perhaps handmade, unwrapped, and anonymous, that is placed on or under the tree when you are settled in. You will choose a gift towards the end of the evening.
The Yule chest is about putting in something pretty special. At the end of the evening, one name of an SCA member, attending the event, will be drawn to take home all the treasures. In order to participate in this, you must be a current member.

BREAD CHALLENGE

“Bread is the king of the table and all else is merely the court that surrounds the king.” (The American novelist Louis Bromfield)
There is a challenge here! Bake bread! There are three categories: medieval recipe, gluten free, and anything goes.
Bring the bread, an ingredient list, and a short blurb on your creation by noon, to the potluck area in the cafeteria.
There will be prizes.

THE HARTWOOD REVEL POTLUCK

There will be a potluck luncheon at Hartwood Revel this year. The meats will be supplied (Roast, Ham, Turkey, Fish) and it is asked that you bring one dish to feed 8 to 10 people per individual attending. It would be lovely if you could attempt a medieval theme. (See document below for all kinds of helpful info!)

Please let us know your chosen category and indicate what you plan to bring.

Cheeses
Pickles/Olives
Buns/Crackers/Breads
Butter (2 pounds needed only)
Vegetables
Salads
Starch (Rice/Potatoes etc)
Desserts/Fruits
Non-Alcoholic Beverage
Coffee/Tea

Please remember to indicate if your contribution needs to be kept warm or heated before serving.
Also include a list of ingredients for your dish and make sure that your name is on your serving dishes and serving utensils.

Leftovers will be used for the later light buffet.

DEFENDERS CHALLENGES

PRESENTING THE RESEARCHER CHALLENGE!

The 2024 Researcher of the Winds Competition Challenge

At Yule, Hartwood Shire will be choosing the new Researcher of the Winds.

This is your chance to showcase your passion and knowledge and share it with us at our Yule celebration! What are you passionate about in the time period of your persona? What have you explored and learned more about?

The competition consists of writing one paper on any historically based topic within the scope of your SCA persona’s time period and country. The paper should be 3-4 pages long, plus a bibliography of your sources. Your subject doesn’t have to be something your persona would have owned or have done, but something you would have known about your country and time period. For more information on what is required, please email me at beatrisofhartwood@gmail.com and I will send you a handout with all the requirements and some suggestions.

Those wishing to enter must advise me no later than October 31st with their intent to enter and the subject (including time period and country) of your entry. An electronic copy of your entry must be received by me no later than November 10th. This will give me time to line up appropriate judges. My email address is beatrisofhartwood@gmail.com.

Good luck and I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Beatris of Hartwood

Researcher of the Winds

PRESENTING THE BARDIC CHALLENGE!

Two pieces in two different mediums
One with minimum documentation. The who, what, where, why, when.
Documentation may be written or verbal. Please keep written documentation to one page or less.

Should you have any questions, please DM Anne Greystoke.

PRESENTING THE CRAFTSMAN CHALLENGE!

In order to select the next Craftsman of the Mountain- The Shire of Hartwood A&S Defender, it is requested that anyone interested bring three items to be shown to the populace at this year’s Hartwood Revel (Yule) representing three crucial aspects of the Craftsman’s abilities. Those are to Know, Learn and Teach. The first item should be something you are known for. The second should be an example of a new skill you have acquired over the last year. The third should be an example of a skill you have taught another in the past year (either made by your own hand or by the hand of your student).
